The head comes from Innocenzo Fraccaroli's Achille ferito, carved in marble in 1842 and now in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan. Fraccaroli chose the moment after the arrow, when the fighting is over and there is nothing left to do but look up.
I drew it after my own visit to Troy. Nine cities lie on top of each other at Hisarlik, and not one of them holds proof that Achilles existed. The tumulus at Cape Sigeion carries his name anyway.
